Песня Heading West была написана Синди Лопер, а также Билли Стейнбергом и Томом Келли - авторами её хитов True Colors и I Drove All Night.

Композиция повествует о расставании с любимым человеком (как и большинство песен с альбома A Night to Remember). В чёрно-белом видеоклипе Синди идёт по пустынной дороге и полю с нефтекачалками и линиями электропередачи.

В 1992 году франкоканадская певица Митсу записала кавер-версию этой песни, включив в неё монолог на французском языке.
