America the Beautiful

«Америка прекрасная», англ. America the Beautiful — американская патриотическая песня. Слова песни написала детская писательница Катарина Ли Бэйтс, а музыку сочинил церковный органист и руководитель хора Сэмюэл Уорд.

Изначально Бэйтс сочинила стихотворение Pikes Peak, которое было опубликовано в 1895 г. в журнале The Congregationalist. В 1882 г. Уорд, не знавший о стихах Бэйтс, сочинил мелодию Materna на слова религиозного гимна 17-го века O Mother dear, Jerusalem.

Уорд умер в 1903 г., за год до того, как на его музыку были положены слова песни Катарины Бэйтс. К моменту её смерти в 1929 г. песня уже приобрела общенациональную популярность. Впервые песня со словами Бэйтс и музыкой Уорда была опубликована в 1910 г. под названием America the Beautiful. В настоящее время это одна из наиболее популярных американских патриотических песен^[1]; временами, особенно во времена администрации Дж. Ф. Кеннеди, выдвигались предложения о том, чтобы она заменила песню The Star-Spangled Banner в качестве Гимна США.
